Poker Rules and Poker Variants

Many people have come to think of "Poker" as a game of No Limit holdem, but this hasn't always been the case. For a long time 5 card draw was the game of choice, and then followed 7 card stud. No limit holdem is still a very new player on the poker stage. I say this because you never know when a new form of poker will take hold and become the next dominant game, so it doesn't hurt to familiarize yourself with other varieties, you might be missing out on one you will really like. Learning new forms of poker will make you a better overall player and you may even learn lessons you can apply to your preferred game. If nothing else sometimes it freshens up a home game to be able to introduce a new variation to the mix. Many of the biggest stakes games in poker are only played as mixed games, popular versions are "H.O.R.S.E."/ "H.O.S.E."/ "H.O.R.S.E.D.". H= Holdem, O=Omaha, R=Razz, S=Stud, E=Stud8/b, D= 2-7 Triple Draw. The reason for playing these mixed games is that it reduces the edge a poker specialist would have playing only their preferred game.
On this page you will find a list of poker games. Follow these links to get rules, links to online poker rooms that offer the games (where possible), and links to strategy information on the game (once again where possible). If you know a good poker game that isn't listed here that should be... please let us know. If you are already familiar with these games and you can skip ahead to the tips and strategies.
